UPDATE |
SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — State police are providing new details about this week's hours-long standoff in Meyersdale as authorities say the suspect reportedly claimed that he was being followed.
According to the affidavit, troopers were dispatched to the area of Large Street, around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, for reports of a man walking around with a handgun.
Police say the man, later identified as 57-year-old Scott Herring, was also allegedly yelling and "running aggressively" at nearby citizens.
Authorities say multiple witnesses provided a description of Herring, with one witness stating that he was "yelling about guns and ammo."
Investigators say another witness reportedly described an interaction with Herring in which he allegedly "pointed his arm at her, 'like it was a gun,' and said '[expletive]. I'll shoot you.'"
While searching for Herring, police say they learned that he had locked himself inside a nearby apartment.
Police say the caller, who was inside said apartment at the time, and was reportedly Herring's paramour, stated that he had recently been acting paranoid, claiming that he was being followed.
Authorities say Herring repeatedly refused to comply with police and state police SERT was eventually called in to assist.
Police noted that the incident lasted into the early morning hours of Wednesday, and that Herring was eventually taken into custody without further incident.
Troopers also noted that during the standoff, all of the nearby apartments were evacuated due to safety concerns.
According to online court records, Herring was arraigned Wednesday on a variety of charges, including making terroristic threats, reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct.
Police also stated in the affidavit that Herring was prohibited from possessing any firearms.
He is jailed in Somerset County on $25,000 bail.
