Melissa Crystal O’Neil was born on July 12, 1988 in Calgary, Alberta to Tim O’Neil and Alison Yeung. Her mother is Chinese and her father has Irish ancestry, making Melissa of Irish and Chinese ethnicity. Her maternal grandfather gave her the Chinese name Oh Seemun.
O’Neil attended Terry Fox High School and later Lester B. Pearson High School. An early passion for entertainment, Melissa has been involved in numerous theatrical productions within the Calgary scene. She was working in a daycare when she decided to audition for the third season of American Idol.
At her auditions, the judges feared her voice and she was ranked top 100, then top 32 and ultimately winner of the contest, making her the youngest and first woman to win Canadian Idol.

As part of her winning award, Melissa signed a recording contract with Sony BMG Canada and the release of her debut single “Alive,” which debuted atop the Canadian Singles Chart and stayed there for four. weeks. The single received platinum certification from the CRIA and has since been certified four times platinum.
The hit single was successful by her debut Melissa O’Neil released her studio album on November 22, 2005. To support her album, O’Neil embarked on her first tour, the Let It Go Tour, which covered North Bay , Ontario. She was supported by Rex Goudie, her Canadian Idol finalist.
While working to advance her musical career, Melissa returned to the stage where it all began, appearing in numerous theater productions including the musical Dirty Dancing in Toronto, Ontario.
Melissa made her film debut in 2010 starring in Broken Hearts. In 2011 she made her debut at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. She also had a guest role on Camelot. At the Princess of Wales Theatre, Melissa performed in a production of Les Miserables in Toronto. Her role as Eponine won her the Dora Award for Outstanding Female Performance.
She then reprized her role in the Broadway production of Les Miserables. Her notable stage work later landed her the role of Two/Portia Lin in the Canadian sci-fi series Dark Matter, which premiered June 12, 2015, on both Space and Syfy. During the same period, Melissa also had a recurring role on Rogue.
After three seasons and 39 episodes, Syfy canceled the series on September 1, 2017.
