Local salon receives donation, offers free services to people struggling during pandemic
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — One business in Cambria County received a generous donation from a customer to help uplift others spirits who have been affected by the pandemic.
Makin’ Waves Salon in Johnstown started the Lift Someone Up Campaign after a customer donated money to create a fund to help people struggling to receive free hair services.
“They decided to donate a sum of money and we created this Lift someone up campaign and what the campaign is, is you email us and tell us about somebody you think has been affected by the coronavirus in that way. Like there job has been taken away or the business that they worked at closed,” said Makin’ Waves Salon owner, Kathy Glattke.
More people are struggling to make ends meet during the pandemic. But with the help of this campaign, those affected can enjoy a moment of self-care.
“Of course, getting your hair done is a great lift but it’s the last thing you’re going to pay for when you’re struggling. We have people putting money away for tuition or just trying to put food on the table and things like that. So you can email us to nominate someone and we contact them and bring them in to get their hair done.,” said Glattke.
Over a handful of people have already benefited from the donation and more are being set up. The hope is after this customer’s donation runs out someone else will step up.
“We’re hoping that maybe it’s a chain reaction and I mean it does benefit us but just to see how happy these people are just the pep in their step when they are done. I mean it is uplifting is really is and that’s why we named it. It’s just a little bit of self-care,” said Glattke.
