Joe Sigillo Making Mark As Nyack Public Schools' Director Of Athletics
Sigillo grew up in Clarkstown, and went to school at Clarkstown South (1993 grad), where he was an All-Section second-baseman/pitcher. Sigillo continued his baseball career in college at St. Bonaventure.
After 10 years in the East Ramapo school system, where he was a teacher and a coach, Sigillo spent two years as athletic director at Ramapo, before coming to Nyack.
"Nyack's wonderful," Sigillo told Daily Voice. "It's a great community, we get fantastic support from our parents and administration. And athletics is a big part of the culture here, so it's a great place to be. A lot of passionate parents - parents who want the best for their kids, in all realms of education, not just athletics.
"I work mostly with the athletes, but there's just a lot of support everywhere, and it's just been a great fit for me here," he added.
Sigillo also echoed athletic directors around the region, saying one of the biggest challenges for high school athletes today is specialization, and the disappearing three-sport athlete.
"The three-sport athlete is something we try to promote here at Nyack," he said. "Our coaches do a pretty good job of trying to get their athletes to try out for other sports.
"Sometimes kids can feel specialization is the way to go," he added. "In reality, a lot of college coaches are looking for multiple sport athletes, because they want to see that they can be successful in more than one avenue.
"They feel that playing more sports benefits them more down the road. So we try to promote it, encourage more kids to do it, but it's a struggle we deal with a lot."
