Former Steelers coach Cowher elected to Pro Football Hall of Fame
CANTON, Ohio — Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher will be immortalized forever in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The Super Bowl-winning coach was told by the Hall’s President & CEO David Baker during Saturday's broadcast of The NFL Today, where Cowher has worked since retiring from coaching, that he was selected as a member of the Centennial Slate for the Class of 2020. The special expanded class is being selected as part of the National Football League's 100th season.
Cowher served as the head coach for the Steelers for 15 seasons (1992-2006) and had an overall career record of 161-99-1.
He led the team to 10 playoff appearances including nine division championships and two Super Bowl appearances. Cowher's Steelers lost to the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XXX in 1996 before lifting the Lombardi Trophy when the Steelers defeated the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XL in 2006.
The remainder of the 15-person Centennial Slate, which also includes former Steelers defensive back Donnie Shell and former coach Buddy Parker as finalists, will be revealed Wednesday. Those inductees will be inducted in September.
The 15 Modern-Era Player Finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2020 include former Steelers Troy Polamalu and Alan Faneca. They will learn their fate on February 1st for an August induction.
