Elmwood Park VFW Post Commander William Mulligan Dies
An Army veteran of the Vietnam War, Mulligan lived in Elmwood Park all of his life. He was the post commander of VFW Post 5084 for 33 years. He was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service in Rochelle Park for 35 years and retired in 2001.
He was also an avid Notre Dame "Fighting Irish" football fan.
"He loved his family and his country and was a major supporter of our community," Elmwood Park Councilman Joe Dombrowski told Daily Voice.
He knew Mulligan his whole life: "He was a gentleman, to say the least."
Dombrowski added that schools and youth organizations throughout the community benefited from Mulligan's work, as he coordinated donations to them -- "too many to list."
Mulligan is survived by his wife, Kathryn (DeGraw); children Patrick, Thomas, William Jr. and his wife Linda, and Christopher and his wife Dawn; grandchildren Kayla, Billy, Katie and Matt; and siblings Joseph, John and Eileen.
He was preceded by his brother James.
"Elmwood Park lost a good man and he will be missed," Dombrowski added.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 1, at the Patrick J. Conte Funeral Home, 274 Market St., in Elmwood Park. The funeral will be at 9 a.m. on Thursday from the funeral home, with a 10 a.m. funeral mass at St. Leo's in Elmwood Park. Cremation will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations are requested for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, by clicking here, or by mail to P.O. Box 1893, Memphis, TN 38101-9950, using this form.
