Publish date: 2024-09-18

Daniel Bennett, age 46, of New Canaan, was arrested around 11:30 p.m., Thursday, April 20 after police responded to a single-vehicle crash on White Oak Shade Road, said Lt. Marc DeFelice, of the New Canaan Police.

Officers identified Bennett as the operator of a Volvo that crashed into the side of the roadway, DeFelice said.

While speaking with Bennett, the officer detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage and signs of impairment, police said.

Bennett refused to perform the standardized field sobriety tests and was taken into custody.

He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and failure to keep right, police said.

Bennett was processed and released on a $250 bond.

He has been the chairman of the Board of Education since 2021. His term is set to expire in 2025.
