Guilty Verdict In Robbery-Murder Of West Haven Man Brings Justice, DA Says

Rickey Trayham, age 28, of New Haven, was found guilty on Wednesday, May 31 by a jury in New Haven of the murder of Rondell Atkinson on Monday, June 7, 2021, said New Haven State’s Attorney John Doyle, Jr.

According to evidence introduced at trial, Traynham shot Atkinson, age 33, of West Haven, during a robbery at the Pease Road Playground in Woodbridge.

Atkinson’s body was found the next day by a jogger. Traynham was implicated in the murder when his codefendant, Jorden Rudel, confessed his involvement in the robbery to multiple family members who testified at the trial, court documents show.

Traynham also was found in possession of the two murder weapons when police arrested him in July 2021.

The case was investigated by the Woodbridge Police Department and the Connecticut State Police.

Police said at the time of the crime they believe Atkinson had gone to the park with the two men who then robbed and killed him before stealing his car and belongings.

“We are grateful to the Woodbridge Police Department, Connecticut State Police, and Division of Scientific Services for their tireless work on this investigation,” Doyle said. “Rondell Atkinson was an upstanding member of the community who fell victim to a senseless act of violence. Although nothing will bring him back, we are happy to see justice for Rondell and his loved ones.”

Sentencing is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 2, in New Haven Superior Court.
